Carpy Boat Safety

This one goes down as one of the ultimate boating safety examples of all time.  And it's not just that they're not wearing their PFD's.

It's a great time of year to be out on the water in your power boat, jet ski or any pleasure craft but make sure you get your BC Boating Licenses.  This can be done cheaply and conveniently online.  A temporary card can be printed immediately upon passing your exam and is good for 90 days.  Not even Canada Post will be able to thwart your summer boating plans.  If NHL'er Scottie Upshall can pull it off in no time, it should be a piece o cake.

Fast Action Idaho Steelheading

Although the steelies are a little more coloured than one's after, the fishing appears to have been quite active for Nick Hoggan & Co.

Deschutes River Rainbows--Stonefly Hatch

Tons of big bugs equals tons of nice trout.  I mentioned recently that I'm partial to the fight of a rainbow over a brown.  I'm also very partial to fishing big hatches, something we don't get a lot of in coastal BC.  Having the trout tip you off and knowing the bug they're feeding on sounds easy but the fish can be very selective during a major hatch.  Solve the pattern and presentation riddle and it can be awesome.

Circle the Wagon/Boat

Tight quarters once again but this time the tarpon makes them work for it and makes them land it themselves. What up with that?

All Aboard--A Tarpon Tale

In those tight quarters I wondered if he was gonna land this baby poon.  I never considered the fact that it might land itself.

Big Flies, Big Fish

As the old saying goes, big fish eat big meals.  Check this one out and maybe don't go swimming here.

On second thought, what possessed this fish to think it needed to eat again.  Must be like me when I'm sitting around and the fridge is just in the next room.

Sweet Dry Fly Trout

I think these boys are in Sweden.  There seems to be a wealth of great trout action there.  Enjoy.

Father

Very touching is all that needs to be said.

I'm sitting eating two heart shaped pancakes my girls have cooked for me on father's day and thinking about my own father.  Clearly, it took William's "dad" a while to win him over.  But great people will do that.  It's only a matter of time.

Best For Last

Great videography in this piece showcasing trout rising for mayflies.  The trout trend toward the smaller side until the last couple--nice browns and rainbows come to hand eventually.  Enjoy the rising fish early and you'll reap the rewards of a nice trout or two late.

Rainbow versus Brown

I've fished browns a fair bit.  They grow big and they dog it out.  But they don't compare to a similarly sized rainbow.  Is this just my bias or is there science to back it up.  I've hunted the internet for burst speeds of different fish.  The article I read claimed an adult steelhead has nearly twice the burst speed of a brown trout.  There have been several comments on the internet about the amazing number of twists and turns some of the steelhead pull off in the air on our teaser.  Burst speeds give us a great deal of insight into why a steelhead can run and jump like no other fish and why they're considered by many to be the ultimate freshwater gamefish.

All Jurassic, All The Time

Okay, maybe not all the time.  But for the second time in a week.  Monster rainbows.  I've caught bows and browns and there seems to be no comparison for fighting ability for two equally sized fish.  If you only fish browns, you need to find some big rainbows some day.  They'll show you why.

Quality Brown Fishing

This piece on fly fishing browns in Norway profiles some pretty fast fishing but the real kicker is the quality of the browns.

How to Drum Up Some Clients

This guy's got it right in my book.  The proof's in the pudding.  Show the people some incredible brown trout and you're likely to fill the calendar with clients.

Monster Bows

Jurassic Lake in Argentina is renowned for its huge rainbows.  We often see people holding up huge browns but huge rainbow footage is far less frequent.  My main contact at Islander Reels has made the trip and I've seen a number of pic's of impressive rainbows.  I love the tiger bows as some call them--heavily spotted beautiful trout.

Fast Action Dry Fly Brown Trout

I've had this happen just before a storm front hits before.  The trout can feel it coming and feed with reckless abandon up until the storm shuts them down.
